The Weather – December Atmospheric Rivers & Wind!

We had a huge atmospheric river hit us, in fact we had 2 the weeks before Christmas! Crazy amounts of rain. The damage from the first was minimal but the second did a lot of damage throughout the area. We actually skated by with very little issue. A 4 hour power outage in the early morning hours of the 17th was it! The night of the 17th we had some major wind gusts that lasted from about 1:15am until about 2:00am. Kept me up the duration, then it went eerily quiet and I dozed off until the alarm at 5:15am. School got closed the 17th-19th so early Christmas break! Last couple pictures are the prep for power outage, just in case. Filled the big trough for flushing toilet, filled big igloo coolers for cooking water, filled blender bottles for drinking water. We have a generator but usually only use it for prolonged outages or if I need it for mom’s medical equipment.

The Coop – Artemis, Daryl & Eggs!

We’re finally getting back to 5 eggs a day so I think the bad weather has made it so the young hens would rather stay close to the coop (aside from the hens who decided the pregnant ewe hay feeder is a great place to lay eggs). Shane has some big plans for the coop this coming spring. Hoping he finds the time to implement them!

Ember has been wanting a white chicken for some time now (it’s a teenager thing). We hatched two out the last couple years and both were roosters and ended up eaten. I decided to surprise her on the 17th by getting a couple white Leghorn pullets from a neighbor. Early Christmas Present! Her pictures after we snuck them in the coop that night. Named Artemis and Daryl. LOL

The Barn – Prepping for babies!

We had most of the barn cleaned in November, but finished it off the weekend after Christmas.
Social pens are great for those with delicate lambs or, heaven forbid, triplets, to stay in a bit longer. Also for first time moms to get used to other moms and babies before heading out in the flock. Also great if I’m running out of room in the jug pens and need to clear them out when they still need tags or trimming. This becomes the second creep pen at the end of lambing.

The Garden – Time for Planning!

  1. Sweet ride Shane got for his birthday, marijuana leaf logo will get you pulled over in Texas (assuming you’d want to go to Texas) and I love the game trail camera you have!

    Have a wonderful New Year!
