Hollow Hills Ranch

Sheep Adventures

Last week one of my ewe lambs I noticed had pneumonia (trouble breathing, coughing, etc) so I caught her and her family up, put them in the medical pen and treated her with penicillin. The next morning I was fully expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised to see her eating alfalfa, nursing, and running away from me as I tried to catch her for her second dose. Love it when things work out for the positive!

Chicken News

We have a Swedish Flower hen who has decided she must free-range outside of the orchard. At first it was just the driveway, then it included the back yard, moved into the horse/yearling ewe lamb area, and now she’s in the barnyard near the overhang. Shane told me she’s a survivor, my response, “Not if she gets in my barn!” haha. Not that it will totally stop her, but I watch some of those hens fly over the hog panels into my garden and into the area behind the old woodshed. I’m going to purchase some of that bird tape that keeps the birds from landing on it and put a couple strands over all the hog panels to see if it helps (I’m hopeful!). Now that the jerks are getting into my garden, it’s making it difficult to plant some of the winter cold crops! Eventually the garden will be surrounded by cyclone fencing Shane was given and the hog panels can go elsewhere.

Eggs one day last week.

River Rocks Explorers

Weather News

We are forecast to get snow tonight through tomorrow morning. The high of 47.3 was just after midnight last night and it was down to 43 when I got up this morning. It’s steadily dropping ahead of that little storm coming in. We’re at 400 feet roughly so aren’t expecting more than maybe an inch or two here. The hills around us should be nice and white though!
